With the advances in digital X-ray technology, we can now manipulate the digital images we take of a pet’s system to see what is wrong.
Pet Digital radiology
For many decades, radiographs have been used as an effective non-invasive method for veterinarians to see inside the animal’s body. A radiograph machine works by directing high-energy radiographic beams at a specific area of your pet’s body. Denser materials in your pet’s body, such as bones and teeth, will absorb radiographic beams, which will be captured on the digital screen.
We may recommend that your pet receive digital radiographs for a variety of reasons, including:
- To assess your pet’s health
- To check for bone fractures, joint dislocations, and other injuries related to blunt or high force trauma (e.g. car accident)
- To visualize and/or confirm the presence of an ingested foreign object
- To rule in or out the presence of certain health conditions including bone tumors
During a digital radiology scan, we’ll most likely put your pet under sedation or, if necessary general anesthesia. This is to ensure that your pet stays still and comfortable during the procedure so that any images collected will be as clear and readable as possible.
Pet Ultrasound
Ultrasonography, a type of ultrasound that creates images of the inner workings of the body, is another diagnostic tool we use. An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to image your pet’s internal organs in a non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free manner. This is just one of the many ways we strive to provide the best care for your pet. We now have another powerful tool at our disposal to detect, diagnose, and prevent illness in your pet by using ultrasonography.
